- 1 c. sifted flour
- 3 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 3 Tbsp. sugar
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 1/4 c. melted shortening
- 1 tsp. salt
- sprinkle of black pepper
- 2 c. cornmeal
- 1 c. milk
Directions

1Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.

2Add cornmeal and mix thoroughly.

3Combine egg, milk and shortening. Pour into flour mixture.

4Stir just enough to moisten dry ingredients.

5Do not beat.

6Turn onto greased 8 x 8 x 2-inch pan. Bake in a 400° to 425° oven for approximately 25 minutes.
