- 1 lb. round beef (1/4-inch thick)
- 3 tsp. salad oil
- speck of pepper
- 3/4 c. thinly sliced onions
- 2 1/2 c. cold water
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. brown sugar
- 3 small bay leaves
- 5 tsp. cold water
Directions

1Cut beef into 1/4-inch cubes; brown in hot oil with a speck of pepper.

2Add onions, and stir until lightly browned.

3Add salt, 2 1/2 cups cold water, sugar and bay leaves.

4Cover; simmer 1 1/4 hours or until tender.

5Remove bay leaves, then stir in flour and 5 teaspoons water, blended together.

6Cook until smooth and thickened.

7Serve over mashed potatoes.

8Makes 4 servings.
