Ingredients
- 1 1/2 c. boiling water
- 1 1/2 c. chopped pitted dates
- 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 3/4 c. sifted flour
- 1 tsp. cream of tartar
- 1 c. chopped walnuts
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 egg
Directions

1Mix the baking soda with the chopped dates.

2Pour the boiling water over the dates and baking soda.

3Add the butter or margarine, sugar and salt; mix well.

4Allow to cool.

5Add the egg when the date mixture is cool and mix it in.

6Add the remaining dry ingredients and beat well.

7Add vanilla and nuts; mix in. Pour batter into 13 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2-inch pan.

8Bake at 350° for 40 to 50 minutes.
