Ingredients

  • 1 heaping Tbsp. butter
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • boiling water
  • 1 c. chopped dates
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Directions

    Preheat oven to 325°.

    Put butter and baking soda into a 1-cup measuring cup.

    Fill up to one cup with boiling water.

    In a bowl, place dates and nuts and pour boiling water over them.

    Cool.

    Mix in sugar, egg yolk, flour, vanilla and salt.

    Pour into greased 9 x 5-inch loaf pan.

    Bake for 1 hour.

    Slice and serve with butter and cream cheese.
