  • 1 (7 oz.) pkg. sliced dates
  • 1 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 1/4 c. sugar
  • 3 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. chopped walnuts
  • 1 tsp. salt

    Scald dates; sprinkle dates with baking soda.

    Add butter; let cool and set aside.

    Beat egg yolks.

    Add sugar, salt and flour; beat together.

    Add chopped nuts.

    Add date mixture; beat.

    Fold in 2 egg whites (stiffly beaten); bake in a slow oven (225° to 250°) for 1 hour.

    Makes 2 (8 1/2 x 2 x 4-inch) loaves or 1 (13 x 4 1/2 x 2-inch) loaf.
