  • 1 c. dates, cut up
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 c. pecans

    Sprinkle soda over dates.

    Pour boiling water over; let cool. Cream shortening; add sugar and eggs.

    Mix well.

    Then add flour and date mixture alternately.

    Last add nuts and vanilla. Grease five No. 2 cans.

    Fill about half full.

    Bake 1 hour at 350°.
