Ingredients
- 3/4 c. sweet sherry or water
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 c. pitted dates, diced
- 1/4 c. shortening
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 1/3 c. flour
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 c. chopped walnuts
Directions

1Heat sherry or water to just below boiling.

2Sprinkle soda over dates in a bowl.

3Pour hot sherry or water over dates and cool.

4Cream together shortening and sugar.

5Add cooled date mixture, beaten eggs and vanilla.

6Mix mixture, stirring until blended.

7Stir in nuts.

8Pour into 2 greased loaf pans (7 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches).

9Bake in moderate oven (350°) for 50 to 60 minutes.
