  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 12 cups boiling water
  • 14 cup butter
  • 1 14 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 12 cups flour, sifted

    Combine dates, raisins and walnuts.

    Sprinkle baking soda over, then pour in boiling water.

    Let stand until cooled to room temperature.

    Preheat oven to 350F Grease and flour 2 loaf pans.

    Cream butter and sugar with electric mixer (stand or handheld).

    Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

    Add vanilla and softened fruit (with any remaining water).

    Fold in flour by hand.

    Divide batter between prepared loaf pans.
