Ingredients
- 1/4 lb. pitted dates, chopped
- 1/3 c. granulated sugar
- 1/3 c. water
- 1/2 c. nuts, chopped
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 c. brown sugar, packed
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp. salt
Directions

1In saucepan, cook dates, granulated sugar and water, stirring constantly until slightly thickened.

2Remove from heat; stir in nuts.

3Cool.

4Mix shortening, brown sugar, egg and vanilla until smooth.

5Stir in flour and salt.

6Divide dough in half.

7Roll each half on waxed paper into rectangle (about 11 x 7-inch).

8Spread half of the date-nut filling on each rectangle.

9Roll up tightly, beginning at long side.

10Pinch edge of dough to seal securely. Wrap and chill at least 4 hours.

11May bake immediately or store for up to 6 weeks.

12Fifteen minutes before serving, heat oven to 400°. Cut rolls into 1/4-inch slices.

13Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet.

14Bake until light brown, about 10 minutes.

15Remove immediately from baking sheet.

16Makes 5 dozen.
