- 1 & 1/2 cups red or orange lentils
- 3&1/2 cups water
- 1 in. piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated
- 1 onion, peeled & sliced
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1&1/2 tsp salt
- pinch of sugar
- 1 large garlic clove
- For the topping:
- 2 tbsp. sour cream or plain yogurt & tomato & fresh cilantro
Directions

11. Place the lentils, water, ginger, onion, turmeric, and salt in medium pan, crush and add garlic. Bring to boil, then reduce the heat. Simmer for 20-30 minutes until soft.

22. Remove pan from heat and mash lentils with potato masher. Add a little hot water if the mixture is too thick. Keep hot.

33. Transfer Dhal to a serving dish and top with yogurt, tomato and cilantro.
