- 3/4 c. sugar
- 2 Tbsp. butter
- 4 egg yolks or 2 whole eggs
- 4 c. flour
- 1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp. mace
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
Directions

1Mix butter and eggs thoroughly.

2Add buttermilk and sifted dry ingredients.

3Stir until smooth.

4Roll out on a lightly floured board to 1/2-inch thickness.

5Let set for 20 minutes.

6Cut with a floured 2 1/2-inch doughnut cutter.

7Drop into a kettle of hot oil.

8Turn when they rise to surface, then turn again when they brown.

9Drain on an absorbent cloth or paper towels.

10Cool.

11Dust with either powdered sugar or cinnamon/sugar.
