Figs Poached in Wine

4 ingredients
8 steps

Ingredients

  • 16 figs, preferably fresh
  • 2 cups fruity red wine, preferably Burgundy (Pinot Noir)
  • 1/2 cup sugar, or to taste
  • Grated or julienned zest of 1 orange

Directions

  1. 1
    Gently wash the figs.
  2. 2
Put the wine and sugar in a saucepan or skillet with a lid; the pan should be broad enough to hold the figs in one layer.
  3. 3
Bring to a boil, then adjust the heat so the mixture simmers.
  4. 4
Add the figs, cover, and cook gently for about 5 minutes.
  5. 5
Transfer the figs to a shallow bowl.
  6. 6
Reduce the cooking liquid over high heat until syrupy, about 10 minutes.
  7. 7
Stir in the orange zest and pour over the figs.
  8. 8
Chill, then serve, spooning some of the sauce over the figs as you do so.
