Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. butter
  • 3 Tbsp. Crisco
  • 1/2 c. milk (at room temperature)
  • 2 jumbo eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 4 c. flour
  • 5 tsp. baking powder
  • 10 oz. chopped dates
  • 8 oz. ground walnuts

Directions

    In a large saucepan, melt together the butter and Crisco. Remove pan from heat and add the milk, eggs and vanilla.

    Add the flour and baking powder.

    Mix until dough pulls away from sides of pan.

    Knead slightly, then let dough rest.

    Shape into small balls, then flatten dough in palms and fill with mixture of the dates and walnuts.

    Place on baking sheets and pierce each one with toothpick before baking at 350° for 35 minutes until light brown.

    Before removing from oven, test a cookie by cutting in half to see if it is cooked through. Remove cookies, 6 at a time and drop into the following Syrup.
