- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup chilled solid vegetable shortening, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
- 6 tablespoons (about) ice water
- 5 pounds Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) unsalted butter
- 1 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 1 1/4 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder*
- 2 tablespoons whipping cream
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
Directions

1Mix first 3 ingredients in large bowl.

2Add shortening; cut in using pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse meal with a few pea-size pieces.

3Mix in enough ice water by tablespoonfuls to form moist clumps.

4Gather dough.

5Divide into 2 pieces, 1 slightly larger than the other.

6Flatten each into disk.

7Wrap each disk in plastic; chill at least 1 hour.
