Ingredients

  • 1-1/4 cups shortening
  • 1-1/4 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup baking cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brewed coffee
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons whole milk

Directions

  1. 1
In a large bowl, cream shortening and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in corn syrup and vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine the flour, cocoa and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well.
  2. 2
Spread into a greased 15x10x1-in. baking pan. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
  3. 3
In a large heavy saucepan, cook butter over medium heat for 5-7 minutes or until golden brown. Pour into a small bowl; beat in the confectioners' sugar, vanilla and enough milk until frosting reaches spreading consistency.
  4. 4
Frost cooled brownies. Cover and refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour, before cutting.
