Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. butter
  • 1/2 lb. lard
  • 2 lb. granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. allspice
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 box currants
  • 1 box seedless raisins
  • 1 pkg. candied citron
  • 1 pkg. candied pineapple
  • 2 pkg. candied lemon peel
  • 2 pkg. candied orange peel
  • 2 pkg. candied cherries
  • 1 lb. walnuts
  • 6 c. coffee
  • 14 c. flour plus 2 Tbsp.
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda

Directions

    Line 8 bread pans with wax paper.

    Cream shortening and sugar. Add spices, molasses and beaten eggs.

    Mix thoroughly.

    Add currants and raisins.

    Cut up candied fruit and add; chop walnuts and add.

    Add salt and baking soda.

    Alternately add coffee and flour, using only enough coffee to make mixture moist.

    Bake in a 250° oven for 2 hours or until toothpick comes out dry.
