  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 4 Tbsp. dark molasses
  • 2 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1 tsp. salt

    Cream shortening and sugar, add egg and molasses.

    Sift remaining ingredients into egg mixture.

    Make balls, walnut-size. Dip tops in sugar.

    Place apart on greased cookie sheet.

    Do not press balls down.

    Bake at 350°.

    Cookies will crack open on top. It is well to chill dough for 1 hour.
