Ingredients

  • 1/3 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. dark molasses
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Directions

    Mix shortening, sugar, egg, molasses and water thoroughly. Blend in remaining ingredients.

    Cover; chill 1 hour.

    Drop dough by teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto greased baking sheet.

    Bake at 400° for 8 minutes or until almost no imprint remains when touched with finger.

    Makes about 4 dozen cookies.
