  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 12 ounces molasses
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 6 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons ground ginger
  • 3 to 4 teaspoons ground cloves

    Cream sugar and shortening.

    Add egg and beat.

    Beat in molasses and vinegar.

    Sift together baking soda, salt, ginger, cloves, cinnamon.

    Add to mix and cream.

    Add flour all at once and stir just until flour is blended.

    Refrigerate until ready to use.
