- 1/2 c. butter or shortening
- 1/2 c. granulated sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 1/2 c. flour (sifted)
- 1 1/2 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. ginger
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 c. molasses
- 1 c. hot water
Directions

1Cream shortening and sugar.

2Add beaten egg.

3Measure and sift dry ingredients.

4Mix molasses with hot water.

5Add dry ingredients alternately with liquid, a little at a time, beat after each addition.

6Bake in paper-lined pan, 9 x 9 x 2-inches, in moderate oven (350°) for 45 minutes.
