Ingredients

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp. molasses
  • 1 c. sour milk or buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Directions

    Mix 5 first ingredients as you would for pie crust. Set aside 1/2 of this mixture. Make hole in remaining dry ingredients; add egg, molasses, buttermilk, soda and salt.

    Mix well; pour into 9 x 13-inch cake pan which has been greased and floured. Sprinkle 1/2 cup reserved dry ingredients on top. Bake 30 minutes in preheated 350° oven.
