Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 1 c. hot water

Directions

    Cream together shortening and sugar.

    Add eggs; beat well. Sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt.

    Combine molasses and water; add alternately with flour mixture to creamed mixture.

    Line an 8 x 8 x 2-inch greased pan with waxed paper.

    Pour in batter.

    Bake in moderate oven at 350° for 50 to 60 minutes.

    Cool 5 minutes.

    Remove from pan.
