- 1/2 c. boiling water
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1/2 c. brown sugar
- 1/2 c. molasses
- 1 well beaten egg
- 1 1/2 c. sifted flour
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. soda
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 3/4 tsp. ginger
- 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
Directions

1Preheat oven to 350°.

2Line pan with wax paper.

3Pour water over shortening; add sugar, molasses and egg; beat well (200 strokes).

4Sift dry ingredients together and add to mixture; beat until smooth.

5Turn into pan and bake for 30 to 40 minutes.

6Done when it shrinks from side of pan.
