Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter or oleo
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c. dark syrup
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 c. hot water

Directions

    Cream butter and sugar; add egg and syrup.

    Add dry ingredients which have been sifted together, then add hot water last and beat until smooth.

    Bake in greased and floured pan (13 x 9-inch) for 35 minutes at 350° or when you insert toothpick in center and it comes out clean.

    Cool in pan and cover with any simple icing.
