- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1/2 c. butter or margarine
- 1 1/2 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. ginger
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 2 1/2 c. plain flour
- 1 c. hot water
- 1 c. molasses
- 1 egg
Directions

1Cream butter and sugar; add beaten egg.

2Sift together dry ingredients.

3Add to butter mixture alternately with molasses. Beat well.

4Add hot water last.

5Mix well.

6Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan.

7Bake at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes.

8Set on rack to cool.

9While still warm, use spatula and spread with molasses.

10Sprinkle with granulated sugar.

11Serve warm with lemon sauce, whipped cream or warm applesauce which is our favorite.
