- 2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 c. packed brown sugar
- 3/4 c. shortening or cooking oil
- 1/4 c. molasses
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. ground ginger
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
- 1/4 c. sugar
Directions

1In a mixing bowl combine about half of the flour, brown sugar, shortening, molasses, egg, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon and cloves.

2Beat with an electric mixer on medium to high speed until thoroughly combined.

3Beat in remaining flour.

4Shape dough into 1-inch balls.

5Roll in sugar.

6Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

7Bake in a 375° oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until set and tops are crackled.

8Cool cookies on a wire rack. Makes about 48.
