Ingredients

  • 2 c. scalded milk
  • 2 heaping Tbsp. lard
  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 2 Tbsp. salt
  • 1 c. sugar
  • flour (add gradually to make stiff batter)
  • 1/4 c. lukewarm water
  • 2 tsp. sugar

Directions

    Put yeast in lukewarm water with 2 teaspoons sugar; stir good. Let set while milk is scalding.

    Add lard to milk to melt while scalding milk.

    Add to sugar and salt; stir.

    Add enough cold water to make lukewarm.

    Add yeast and stir until yeast is well dissolved, then add flour, a few cups at a time.

    Knead down.

    Put in bowl with a little oil rubbed to bottom of bowl.

    Also rub oil on top of dough.

    Let rise until double.

    Cut out into loaves and shape.

    Put in bread tins.

    Let rise until doubled in size.

    Bake at 350° for 30 to 45 minutes.

    Butter loaves after removed from oven.
