Ingredients

  • 3 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 5 c. unsifted self-rising flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. shortening, melted then cooled (I use Crisco)
  • 2 c. lukewarm buttermilk (or 2 c. sweet milk mixed with 2 tsp. lemon juice)

Directions

    Dissolve yeast in water and set aside.

    Mix flour, sugar and soda.

    Cut in shortening.

    Add milk and water-yeast mixture to flour mixture and mix well.

    (Dough will probably be quite sticky.)

    Dough may be covered in plastic wrap and refrigerated until ready to use or may be prepared for baking.
