- 1/2 c. shortening
- 2 c. sugar
- 5 egg yolks
- 2 c. flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. coconut
- 1 c. chopped nuts
- 5 egg whites, beaten stiff
Directions

1Cream margarine and shortening; add sugar, beating until smooth. Add egg yolks; continue beating. Combine flour, salt and soda. Add alternately with buttermilk, then stir in vanilla. Add coconut and nuts. Fold in egg whites. Bake in 3 greased and floured 8-inch cake pans at 350° for 25 minutes. Cool completely before frosting.
