  • 1 stick margarine
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 5 egg yolks
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. coconut
  • 1 c. chopped nuts
  • 5 egg whites, beaten stiff

Directions

    Cream margarine and shortening; add sugar, beating until smooth. Add egg yolks; continue beating. Combine flour, salt and soda. Add alternately with buttermilk, then stir in vanilla. Add coconut and nuts. Fold in egg whites. Bake in 3 greased and floured 8-inch cake pans at 350° for 25 minutes. Cool completely before frosting.
