- 1 1/2 c. flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 2 Tbsp. vegetable shortening
- 1/4 c. applesauce
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 egg or 1/4 c. substitute
- 1/2 c. strawberry preserves or choose your favorite fruit preserves
- powdered sugar
Directions

1Preheat oven to 400°.

2Lightly spray cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray.

3In a large bowl, whisk vegetable shortening and applesauce until shortening breaks into pea size pieces.

4Add sugar and beat well. Add vanilla and egg.

5Mix well. Add flour mixture to applesauce mixture. Blend until smooth. Mixture will be stiff.

6Using flour coated hands, roll a teaspoon of dough into

8Place on cookie sheets 1-inch apart. Press thumb into center to make indention. Fill with 1/2 teaspoon preserves.

9Bake 12 to 15 minutes until light golden brown. Remove from oven and cool 10 minutes.

10Place on cooling rack and dust with powdered sugar.

11Makes 24 cookies.
