- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 c. shortening or butter
- 2 c. flour
- 4 eggs, separate yolks
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 c. blackberry jam
- 3 Tbsp. cocoa
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. allspice
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 c. nuts (optional)
Directions

1Cream butter and sugar.

2Add remaining ingredients except jam and egg whites.

3Blend and then add jam.

4Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into mixture.

5Bake at 350° for 45 to 50 minutes. Frosting is optional, but a Caramel Icing or Cream Cheese Icing is delicious on this cake.
