Ingredients

  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 c. shortening or butter
  • 2 c. flour
  • 4 eggs, separate yolks
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 c. blackberry jam
  • 3 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. nuts (optional)

    Cream butter and sugar.

    Add remaining ingredients except jam and egg whites.

    Blend and then add jam.

    Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into mixture.

    Bake at 350° for 45 to 50 minutes. Frosting is optional, but a Caramel Icing or Cream Cheese Icing is delicious on this cake.
