Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 c. Karo syrup (white or dark)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 c. milk

Directions

    Cream shortening.

    Add sugar and half of Karo gradually. Cream until fluffy.

    Add egg yolks one at a time and beat well. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk.

    Add vanilla and beaten egg whites.

    Add remaining Karo gradually, beating until stiff meringue is formed.

    Add to batter.

    Makes 2 layers.

    Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in 350° oven until done.
