  • 3 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 1/2 c. white Karo syrup
  • oil of clove, cinnamon or peppermint
  • 1 bottle food color

    Stir first 3 ingredients together over medium heat until sugar dissolves and it begins boiling. Leave on stove eye and don't stir anymore. Cook until mixture reaches 310° on candy thermometer (about 45 minutes). Remove from heat and let it settle. Stir in choice of food color; mix well to avoid streaks. Stir in flavoring (Lee uses about half the bottle, probably about 2 tablespoons). Mix well under a vent or fan. Fumes are very strong. Sift powdered sugar onto a 4-sided cookie sheet. Pour mixture over it and let cool completely. Use handle of knife to break it up.
