Ingredients

  • 2 c. self-rising corn meal mix
  • 1/4 c. self-rising flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • enough buttermilk (must be buttermilk or the bread just won't be the same) to make batter the consistency of cake batter

Directions

    Mix all ingredients.

    Grease an iron skillet with cold Crisco (this makes the bread not stick to the pan); pour the batter into the skillet.

    Bake slowly at about 325° to 350° until bread is very brown and crispy.

    If you prefer it softer, don't brown quite as much.
