  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 1 tsp. boiling water
  • 1 c. milk
  • pinch of salt
  • 5 egg whites, beaten stiff
  • 2 1/2 c. cake flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 c. finely chopped walnuts

Directions

    Cream sugar and butter until smooth; add boiling water and mix thoroughly.

    Add flour, baking powder and salt alternately with milk. Add walnuts, then fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.

    Bake in two greased and floured 8 or 9 inch layer cake pans in 350° oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until cake tests done.

    Turn out on racks to cool.
