Matzo Meat Pie

  • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped
  • 3 Tbsp. oil
  • 1 1/2 lb. ground lamb or beef
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 2 Tbsp. raisins
  • 2 Tbsp. pine nuts or walnuts
  • 1 c. warm stock
  • 5 to 6 matzo
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

    Saute onion in 2 tablespoons oil until golden.

    Add meat and spices.

    Stir and cook until browned, but moist (8 to 10 minutes). Add raisins.

    In small pan, saute nuts in 1 tablespoon oil.

    Place stock in small rectangular dish.

    Soak matzo to absorb liquid, 1 at a time.

    Press 2 or 3 soaked matzo into 9-inch pie plate, cutting it where necessary to fit.

    Place fillings on top.

    Cover with remaining matzo.

    Brush top with egg and bake at 375° for 30 minutes or until golden on top.
