Ingredients
- Even if you're not a bourbon fan (!?) or if mint makes you feel like you just left the dentist
- we've got three twists on the classic julep
- one of which is sure to suit your fancy (hat). The Kentucky Derby barkeeps use Early Times. Just make sure you use a Kentucky bourbon
- like Maker's Mark
- Basil Hayden's
- or our favorite
- Four Roses. How to make: Make mint simple syrup. Bring 2 cups water and 2 cups sugar to boil
- and cook until sugar has dissolved. Cool and place in a covered container with 8 mint sprigs. Refrigerate overnight. Fill a silver julep with crushed ice. Add 1 tablespoon mint syrup and 2 ounces bourbon. Stir rapidly to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. The Champagne Julep If straight Kentucky bourbon will have you passed out in the bleachers before the starting gun
- a less aggressive Champagne julep might be your best bet. How to make: Add 1 tablespoon mint syrup to a Champagne flute. Add 2 dashes bitters and fill glass with champagne. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. The Basil Julep Not a fan of mint? Skip the infused simple syrup and use basil instead. How to make: Stir 2 teaspoons superfine sugar and 1 tablespoon water in a silver julep cup until sugar dissolves. Add 6 basil leaves; gently crush with a spoon. Fill a silver julep cup with crushed ice
- and add 2 ounces bourbon. Stir rapidly to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh basil. The Ginger Julep The bracing bite of ginger and tart fresh lemon juice add a bright layer to the classic mint julep. How to make: Fill a silver julep cup with crushed ice. Add 1 tablespoon mint syrup
- 2 ounces bourbon
- 1 ounce ginger liqueur
- and the juice of half a lemon. Stir rapidly to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

The recipe I use, from Louisville's Cabbage Patch Circle's cookbook, calls for cocoa in addition to the ingredients in this one (I up the 2 tablespoons to a quarter-cup, and use Droste). They're also great as Christmas cookies, and the way the calendar pages are flying past this year it might be time to start pulverizing the Nilla Wafers and jiggering out the mint-free bourbon . . . .","13":"The Official Mint Julep of the Kentucky Derby and 3 Smart Variations","16":"The Official Mint Julep of the Kentucky Derby Of course we love the excuse to trot out a grand hat, admire the handsome horses, and get swept up in al"}
