  • 3 to 4 c. navy beans
  • ham bone
  • 6 c. boiling water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 peppercorns
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 2 stalks diced celery with leaves

    Soak beans overnight.

    Boil ham bone, water, bay leaf, peppercorns and cloves.

    Add beans; boil 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

    Last half hour, add the rest of ingredients.

    Add salt and pepper to taste.

    Makes 6 cups.
