Ingredients: 1 c. sugar; 2 c. raisins; 1 c. water; 1/2 c. shortening; 2 c. plain flour; 1 tsp. baking powder; 1/4 tsp. salt; 1 tsp. cinnamon; 1 tsp. nutmeg; 1/2 tsp. cloves; 1 tsp. soda; 1 Tbsp. boiling water

2 c. raisins
1 c. water
1/2 c. shortening
2 c. plain flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. soda
1 Tbsp. boiling water

Directions

In saucepan, put raisins, sugar and water; boil for 3 minutes. Add shortening; set aside until cool.

Mix flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.

Add little at a time to raisin mixture and stir; mix soda with boiling water.

Add this last to cake mixture, stir well and pour into lightly greased square 9-inch cake pan; bake at 350° for approximately 30 minutes.
