Ingredients

  • 1 c. rolled oats (heaping)
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 4 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 1 pkg. dry yeast, dissolved in 1/3 c. lukewarm water
  • 5 1/2 c. flour (more or less)

Directions

    Pour 2 cups boiling water over the first 4 ingredients; stir. Let stand until cool.

    Add yeast.

    Add flour and knead.

    Let rise until double in bulk in a warm place.

    Knead and make into 2 large loaves; let rise again until double in bulk.

    Bake at 375° for 45 minutes.

    (This also makes about 20 large rolls.)
