  • 1 can lye
  • 3 Tbsp. Borax
  • 3 gal. water
  • 4 1/2 lb. cracklings
  • 1/4 c. household ammonia
  • 1 oz. oil of sassafras

Directions

    Bring lye and water to a boil in iron kettle.
  2. 2
    Add cracklings and boil 2 hours.
  3. 3
    When the mixture looks like syrup and all cracklings heat up, add Borax and ammonia.
  4. 4
    If you add oil of sassafras, it will have a nice scent.
