- 2 c. Softasilk flour
- 1 1/4 c. sugar
- 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/3 c. soft shortening
- 1 c. milk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 egg (1/4 c.)
Directions

1Heat oven to 350° (moderate).

2Grease and flour two layer pans, 8 x 1 1/2-inches or a square pan, 8 x 8 x 1 3/4-inches. Measure flour by dip-level-pour method or by sifting.

3Blend flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

4Add shortening, 2/3 of milk and vanilla.

5Beat 2 minutes at medium speed on mixer or 300 vigorous strokes by hand.

6Scrape sides and bottom of bowl constantly.

7Add rest of milk and egg.

8Beat 2 more minutes, scraping bowl frequently.

9Pour into pan(s).

10Bake layers about 30 minutes, square 30 to 35 minutes.

11Cool.

12Frost with your favorite icing.
