Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. butter
  • 9 to 10 medium onions, sliced thin
  • 4 to 5 slices buttered toast, cut into pieces
  • 1/2 lb. American cheese, grated
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 tsp. celery seed

Directions

    Butter a flat 2-quart baking dish.

    Boil onions in water until tender; drain.

    Line the baking dish with toast, crust removed. Cover with a layer of onions and a layer of grated cheese.

    Repeat layer of toast; cover with layer of onions then layer of cheese. At this point casserole may be covered with plastic wrap and stored in refrigerator for the day.

    Beat egg slightly and add balance of ingredients.

    Pour over casserole.

    Bake at 375° for 40 minutes.

    Serve at once.
