Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. milk
  • 2 pkg. yeast
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. mace or nutmeg
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 4 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • fruit preserves
  • fat for deep frying

Directions

    Scald milk and allow to cool to lukewarm.

    Sprinkle in yeast. Cream butter and sugar mixed with mace or nutmeg until fluffy. Add egg yolks and whole egg, salt and vanilla.

    Stir in flour and milk, gradually beating until well blended.

    Cover.

    Let rise in warm place until double in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours.

    Punch down. Knead, adding more flour, if too soft to handle.

    Let rise again until double.
