  • 1 pt. (16 oz.) milk, scalded
  • 1 large cake yeast (2.0 oz.) or 4 dry yeast packets
  • 2 c. flour
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. melted shortening
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • grated rind from 1 orange or 1 1/2 tsp. orange zest
  • approximately 5 c. flour

    Scald milk and cool to 120°.

    Add yeast and 2 cups flour.

    Let this mixture stand for 1/2 hour to form a sponge.
