  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 12 teaspoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons shortening, softened
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 12 cup raisins

    In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water.

    Stir in the salt, sugar, and shortening, plus 2 cups of flour and rolled oats.

    Beat this mixture for 3 minutes.

    Stir in the last 2 cups of flour and the raisins; mix till batter is smooth and satiny.

    Cover with a clean cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.

    Once doubled, stir down the batter while counting slowly to 15, then spoon the batter into 2 greased loaf pans; cover with a cloth, let rise before baking.
