  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 oz. bottle red food coloring (1/4 c.)
  • 2 heaping Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/4 c. cake flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 2 eggs

    Mix butter, sugar and eggs.

    Make a paste of red coloring and cocoa.

    Add to creamed mixture.

    Add buttermilk, alternating with sifted flour and salt.

    Add vanilla.

    In small cup, mix soda and vinegar, then add to rest of mixture, blending instead of beating. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 350° in 2 (8-inch) greased and floured pans.
