- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 oz. red food coloring
- 2 Tbsp. cocoa
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 2 1/4 c. cake flour
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 Tbsp. vinegar
- 1 tsp. baking soda
Directions

1Preheat oven to 350°.

2Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Combine coloring and cocoa, mixing well.

3Add cocoa mixture to creamed shortening.

4Add salt, buttermilk, flour and vanilla, beating constantly.

5Mix vinegar and baking soda.

6Stir, do not beat, the vinegar mixture into the batter.

7Bake in two (9-inch) greased and floured cake pans for 30 to 35 minutes.

8Cool.

9When the cake is thoroughly cool, cut each layer in half to form 4 thin layers.

10Put the following filling between the layers and on top of the cake.
