- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 3/4 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 3 eggs, separated
- 2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
- 1/2 c. cocoa (regular type, dry)
- 1 1/2 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 1/2 c. cold water
Directions

1Preheat oven at 350°.

2Cream the shortening and 1 cup of sugar until light. Add vanilla and egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each.

3Sift together dry ingredients.

4Add to creamed mixture alternating with cold water, beating after each addition. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form.

5Gradually add 3/4 cup sugar, beating until stiff peaks form. Fold into batter; blend well.

6Bake in 2 greased and lightly floured 8 x 1 1/2-inch round pans at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes.
