- 1 cake yeast
- 1/2 c. lukewarm water
- 1/3 c. shortening
- 1 c. warm water
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 4 c. flour
- melted butter
- 1/3 c. sugar
Directions

1Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup water; add sugar and 1 cup flour. Set aside for about 10 minutes to form a sponge.

2Melt shortening in 1 cup warm water; add egg and stir into sponge.

3Beat in salt sifted with 3 cups flour or enough to make a rather stiff dough. Knead until the dough feels elastic and transfer to a large greased bowl.

4Cover and let stand until double in bulk.
